Your style pursues a timeless idea of beauty, what is the secret to combining artisan traditions with a contemporary aesthetic?

We are aware that beyond the rationale of seasonal trends - which the world of design has borrowed from the world of fashion - there is a timeless aspect of beauty, an aesthetic quality that transcends eras and styles. For this reason, Devon&Devon collections have always drawn their inspiration in equal measure from both Victorian design and Art Deco architecture, from the American Jazz Age and the European 1950s: they distill their essence and reinterpret them with a focus on the philosophy of contemporary living. Choosing to follow a timeless aesthetic is not only a matter of taste, but it is also how we put into practice everyday Devon&Devon's commitment to sustainable consumption: in a nutshell, we manufacture only products that can continue to be desirable for a very long time and perfectly withstand the test of time.

In your view, the bathroom represents a temple of well-being and personal care. Which are the absolute must-have furniture elements in this room?

For Devon&Devon the bathroom is not simply a functional area, it is a “separate” place where beauty and comfort invite you to take care of yourself and devote time to your well-being. That is the reason why in our latest collections we have introduced a refined reinterpretation of the traditional bedroom dressing table (Zelda), a sink cabinet with a vanity nook (Season Vanity), and a super comfortable large bathtub (The Thirties) featuring two armrests to lean on for total relaxation.

Devon&Devon was born in Florence, the cradle of manufacturing knowledge. What are the values that support your production process?

Our production chain is based on solid relationships with master craftsmen who embody the utmost excellence in their respective fields. That's why Devon&Devon always values the experience and talent of those who know the art of selecting and working the marble, those who know how to beautifully shape wood moldings, those who melt cast iron and polish it entirely by hand, and those who apply gold leaf still following the rules established in Florence by the ancient Guilds of Arts and Crafts.

In tandem, Devon&Devon invests in the future. We invest in new Green Guard Gold-certified sustainable materials (such as White Tec Plus, which replaces fossil resins with biobased components), in new technologies (such as the innovative ALL-OVER printing technique that makes it possible to produce porcelain stoneware slabs that perfectly mimic the texture and nature/qualities of marble), and in new collaborations with leading design and architecture firms, such as Gensler, Massimo Iosa Ghini, Marcel Wanders, and Pierre-Yves Rochon.

What is the step-by-step process of making a bathtub, from its conception to the finished piece? How does this object reflect the work of the craftsmen who contributed to its creation?

The history of bathroom design is anything but linear: from a technical and functional point of view, the “perfect” bathrooms of the Palace of Knossos were light years ahead of the 18th-century ones in Paris, and the cast-iron bathtubs of the Victorian era were undoubtedly more comfortable than those of the 1980s. So, the “invention” of a bathroom does not fit into a tradition that follows a predictable evolutionary direction. The challenge faced by those who design a new bathroom is precisely this: to be confronted with an undefined canon.
