How did you first become involved in the world of design?
My path to interior design was organic and deeply influenced by my global experiences. After building a successful fashion business, I became increasingly drawn to how spaces shape the human experience. Working with retail environments revealed a deeper calling – creating meaningful interiors that tell stories. My travels across South America, the Balkans, Europe, and the Middle East connected me with remarkable artisans and their ancestral techniques, ultimately leading me to return to school to study at London's KLC School of Design. These diverse influences now inform Studio 502's approach to creating spaces that honour craftsmanship while embracing contemporary living.
When designing a room, what is the most crucial aspect for you?
Understanding the human element is paramount. Whether working on residential or commercial projects, we begin by deeply understanding who will inhabit the space and how they'll interact with it. Our design process always starts with listening – to our clients, to the space itself, and to its context. Every decision flows from there. I'm fortunate to work with an exceptional design team, and our collaborative approach ensures each project benefits from diverse perspectives and expertise. We believe the best designs emerge through thoughtful dialogue and shared vision.
What challenges did you face during the design process?
Our work on Mokosh restaurant in Villa Tončić in Split, Croatia perfectly illustrates the delicate balance between honoring heritage and creating contemporary relevance. As a protected building, we faced significant restrictions – the central room and blue room walls were essentially untouchable. However, this challenge led to an inspiring solution. We drew inspiration from the original architect, Kamilo Tončić, who, in 1922, collaborated with Applied Arts students to decorate the interiors and exteriors. Following his collaborative spirit, we partnered with regional artists to create a space that playfully respects Tončić's legacy while bringing fresh energy to these historic rooms.
How would you define your signature style?
I'm deeply drawn to Mid-Century Modern principles – not just for their aesthetic appeal but for their fundamental values. This movement championed the perfect balance of form and function, celebrating clean lines and organic forms while emphasizing human comfort and accessibility. What resonates most is how it combines warmth with functionality, creating sophisticated and welcoming spaces. These principles guide our work at Studio 502, though we always adapt them to each project's unique context.
Why should architects and interior designers include pieces of Italian craftsmanship in their projects?
Italian craftsmanship represents an unbroken lineage of excellence that has shaped global design sensibilities. It's not just about aesthetic beauty – it's about an approach to creation that prioritizes quality, durability, and timeless elegance. Italian crafted pieces carry centuries of refined technique and innovation, making them not just furniture or objects, but investments in lasting quality. They bring authenticity and sophistication to any space while standing the test of time.
How do you balance aesthetics and functionality in your projects?
This balance is at the heart of successful design. We believe that true beauty emerges when form serves function while maintaining personality and warmth. Each project presents its own unique balancing act – some spaces demand more functionality, others more expression. Through close collaboration with our clients and team, we find that sweet spot where practical needs meet aesthetic ambition. The key is ensuring that beauty never compromises usability, and function never sacrifices character.
Is there a dream project you aspire to work on?
My recent travels through South America have deeply moved me, particularly my encounters with indigenous communities and their remarkable artistic traditions. My dream project would showcase their extraordinary craftsmanship and celebrates these enduring cultural treasures. These artisans create works that carry profound ancestral narratives – stories that offer valuable lessons about sustainability, community, and our connection to the natural world. I believe we have much to learn from these traditions, and I'm passionate about creating platforms that preserve these practices, celebrate their contemporary relevance, and support these communities continued artistic evolution.
