The Interview

How did you first become involved in the world of design? Tell us your story.

I began my design journey in Dublin, Ireland, where I graduated with a degree in architecture. I later pursued studies in animation, which offered me a different perspective on design and the importance of storytelling. After completing my Part III studies, I later relocated to London and joined 1508 where I transitioned into interior architecture and design. This new path not only allowed me to expand my creativity in exciting ways but also deepened my passion for crafting thoughtful, cohesive design narratives. Weaving these narratives throughout every aspect of a project ensures that each design element contributes to the overall story and authenticity of the space.

What was your source of inspiration for the design of the Entertainment Room in the third edition of L'Appartamento by Artemest?

Our source of inspiration for the entertainment room was the 19th-century salon, a space where select gatherings shared ideas on literature, art, and music while enjoying curated drinks and exquisite canapés. These salons were not only a showcase of the art of entertaining but also a platform for learning and self-expression, in particular for women who did not have the opportunity to join exclusive members’ clubs or societies.

Re imagining this tradition, the modern salon becomes a space for connection; a venue to spark conversation, showcase creativity, and explore the world from fresh perspectives. This concept defines the room: a place where history meets the contemporary art of dialogue and exchange.

How would you define your signature style, and how is it reflected in your projects?

I would answer this that we do not have a signature style. 1508 London has deliberately chosen not to align itself with an "above-the-door" personality or a singular house style. Our design philosophy embraces a measured approach, inspired by history, geography, and the architectural vernacular unique to each project. We draw deeply upon culture. With six studios across four regions, 1508 London is renowned for creating exceptional spaces worldwide.

What distinguishes us as a design firm is the quality and depth of our design – it’s not enough to be superficially beautiful. We’ll research the geography and history of any project and start by asking, ‘Why does it belong here and what stories will you tell people about it?’ We don’t have a fixed house style but instead start with the story and design to that.

Why should an Architect or Interior Designer include pieces of Italian Craftsmanship in their projects?

As a nation, Italy has a wealth of historic and cultural inspiration for art and design, where centuries of craftsmanship have shaped a deep, innate understanding of the beauty in authentic materials. The artistry of Italian design is unparalleled, with every piece reflecting a timeless commitment to excellence. Working alongside Italian designers and artisans introduces a bespoke dimension to any project, whether it’s the drama of a richly veined marble, the precision of clean-lined, crafted furniture, or the luminous allure of an exquisite blown glass chandelier. Each creation tells a story of tradition, skill, and a passion for beauty that is uniquely Italian.
