The design studio GACHOT has transformed a triplex in the SoHo neighborhood, where every detail—from the color palette to the finishes and natural lighting—has been meticulously curated as part of a cohesive vision. The goal of the project was to fully bring the client’s vision to life while optimizing the use of space, creating a loft that is both intimate and ideal for social gatherings. The design seamlessly merges the interior with the exterior, creating a flow that enhances the unique character of the space.
GACHOT is a design studio and development consultancy with service at its core. Led by principals John and Christine Gachot, the team brings together diverse skills in brand development, interior design, hospitality, and real estate development to overcome the constraints of physical space and deliver thoughtful, project-specific results. Inspired by a modern sensibility with an eye towards livable comfort, GACHOT designs unique experiences with a refined aesthetic and a radical sense of place. GACHOT’s experience in varied disciplines allows the studio to partner with clients on interior design and concept for each project. The studio looks at each project with a wide lens, developing a conceptual narrative with the client that weaves through the design and informs every minute detail. It is a given that the design should look good; that it should work. GACHOT endeavors to ensure the identity is a complete whole, from the conception of various program elements all the way through to the final built product.
Nestled within a cast-iron building in Manhattan’s iconic SoHo neighborhood, this multi-level residence is rich in personality and character. Drawing inspiration from the client’s distinctive vision, the design integrates thoughtful choices from paint colors to bespoke furnishings and artwork, resulting in a space that feels both intricate and harmonious. Soft textures and carefully considered architectural details provide a grounding backdrop throughout the home. Warm plaster subtly enhances the walls, while gentle archways carve out different areas of the loft. A curved, custom-designed railing frames the staircase, and a rounded custom headboard in the primary bedroom fosters a sense of tranquility. In the dining room, a radius ceiling softens the space, subtly defining it while visually separating it from the adjacent living area.
The design balances the need for both private retreat and spaces for social gatherings. This thoughtful fluidity between public and private areas enhances the home’s function, creating an ongoing connection between interior and exterior. From the expansive living room to the secluded terraces and rooftop garden, a seamless indoor-outdoor flow prevails. The natural light from outside is accentuated by arched openings in the living room, taking advantage of the high ceilings and allowing shorter windows to be concealed by custom, well-lit window treatments. The overall effect is one of harmony, with each element working together to create a welcoming, intimate atmosphere.
How did you first become involved in the world of design? Tell us your story.
John and I both came to New York with plans to pursue careers outside of design. I initially moved here with an interest in events, and John started out in the art world. But over time, we both found ourselves drawn to design. We actually met while working at Bill Sofield’s studio, and from that moment, everything just clicked. We’re incredibly grateful for how our careers have evolved!
Why should an Architect or Interior Designer include pieces of Italian Craftsmanship in their projects?
Italian craftsmanship is truly world-class! It is all about incredible quality, a distinct sense of place, and timeless beauty. We deeply admire the attention to detail and the artistry that goes into each masterpiece. It’s not just about adding a beautiful object to a space; it’s about bringing in a piece of history and authenticity like only the Italians can!
Is there a dream project you aspire to work on?
We're currently working on our dream project in the studio, and we can't wait to share it with you soon! That said, our recent collaboration on the renovation of the Metropolitan Opera’s Patron Lounge in New York was truly a pinch-me moment!
